Time Flies

April 1, 2019

It's that time of the year. I'm feeling more like a zombie than a teacher. I've been cooped up all week with my students while they STAAR test. It's brutal on everyone but an unavoidable task. With the STAAR Test comes the end of the year.  I remember the beginning of the school year. The nervous energy from both me and my students. Learning the new expectations, procedures, and routines. Connecting and bonding. We've become a family. We have a system and routine. Monday's commonly confused words. Tuesday's revising & editing. Wednesday: Thesaurus Day, and Thursday: Dictionary & Flocabulary Day. And Friday is Root Word Day. Reading, writing, and discussions are included daily throughout each period. I can teach them with my eyes closed. They can run the classroom themselves because of the routines and systems that I have in place. It's perfect, and soon it must end.

Hopefully, I've taught them more than just reading and writing. Hopefully, I've taught them to be themselves. There's nothing better than someone who is genuine. Maybe they'll remember the lesson on asking questions and researching things that they don't know. There's a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. And most importantly, I hope that they remember that no one is perfect. I modeled this again and again. It's okay if you don't get it right the first time. Or the second time. Or the third. Just keep going. Just keep learning.

I'm always fascinated at how time flies when you're having fun. It's a bittersweet. I hope I taught them well.
