He's Checking His Device and He's Checking It Twice!
Sometimes, children ask questions about Santa Claus or anything else, for that matter, that forces us (adults) to use our imagination on a higher level in order to create a logical and convincing answer - especially if we choose to preserve their innocence.
For instance, one of my youngest nephews asked me, "How does Santa REALLY know if you've been naughty or nice?" Keep in mind that he asked this 'million dollar' question just after he continuously jumped from couch to couch knocking a cup of apple juice off of the coffee table and onto the floor. Good question ... I thought as I dabbed the rug with a warm, soapy cloth. I guess that I took too long to answer his question, so he put down his iPad, repeated his question, and knelt down to my level. "How?" he echoed.
"Well..." I slowly responded, "You have Mommies and Daddies that let Santa know stuff. And you can't forget about Teachers and Aunties." Of course, I loved the 'Auntie' part of my answer since I had personally witnessed the juice fly onto the floor; however, my curious nephew wasn't threatened at all about me having access to Santa. He just shrugged his shoulders, picked up his iPad, and turned up the volume to his game.
"And devices!" I quickly blurted out. "Devices help Santa to monitor behavior, too." His movements seemed to be in slow motion as he looked up in disbelief and turned down his video game. "He knows if I'm good or bad by my iPad?" he inquired.
Now, I had his attention.
"Yep," I said and walked into the kitchen with my damp cloth. There was a thud sound as a result of his leap from the couch to the floor and a clapping sound from his little feet sprinting on the hardwood. "How?" he asked entering the kitchen. Honestly, I hadn't thought that far ahead about this burning question, but I had to be quick.
"Santa Claus has a device, too, and he's virtually connected to everybody else who has one..." I continued, "Yep. That's right! And this allows him to check on you every once in a while." Still not satisfied, he continued to probe, "What exactly is he checking for?"
"All I'm saying, Nephew, is that Santa wants to make sure that you're being 'cyber nice.' That you're courteous when gaming online, that you're on kid appropriate sites, and that you take breaks from your device every once in a while. That's all!" I said with a smile.
He was quiet for a moment. Then, his face lit up light a Christmas tree. "Oh," he said, "It's like his list!"
"What do you mean?" I questioned.
Excited that he had figured it out. "You know, Auntie, his list. How he checks his list, and then he checks it twice!"
Fortunately, this was my ticket out. "Exactly, Nephew! That's all I'm saying is that he's constantly checking his device, and he's checking it twice." I blew him a kiss, and he caught it and put it in his pocket for later.
After our exhausting and intriguing conversation, we both decided to take a break from our devices and listen to Christmas music, make gingerbread houses, drink plenty of hot cocoa, and watch lots of Christmas movies which is the same thing that I wish for you'all.
May you'all truly enjoy your holiday and connect with your family and friends!
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
